The prelude to the high mountains
Among the novelties of the 2026 Giro d’Italia is the passage through Ungiasca, a village in the municipality of Cossogno (Verbano-Cusio-Ossola).
Stage 13, from Alessandria to Verbania, looks ideal for classics riders, with a hilly finale combining the climbs of Bieno and Ungiasca.
The latter, set within the Val Grande National Park, is 4.7 km at 7,1%: it starts steeply with gradients around 9%, eases in the middle, then becomes more demanding again with double-digit ramps towards the summit.
The following false flat and technical descent could make this section decisive, encouraging attacks and selection.
