With almost 300 days of sunshine every year, majestic mountain peaks over 4,000 metres high, unspoilt nature and an abundance of delicious local specialities, Valais is a heaven for sports enthusiasts, food lovers, families and culture vultures.

For cycling fans, it’s the perfect playground. From the far-stretching plains of the Rhône Valley and its many side valleys to Lake Geneva and the Rhône Glacier, with impressive dams and legendary mountain passes, the diversity of cycling trails is unique to Valais. Stunning routes meander through picturesque vineyards, wind deep into rugged valleys and climb some of the most spectacular peaks in the Swiss Alps. With such unique topography, Valais boasts a vast landscape ideal for cycling. The region’s charm appeals to experienced cyclists, occasional mountain bikers and e-bike fans who, surrounded by demanding yet spectacular scenery, are free to roam the canton’s 2,000 kilometres of cycling trails.

A particular favourite of cycling fans, the region is home to an extensive network of fully signposted trails, such as the Valais Cycling Tour, where cyclists can circumnavigate the entire canton, pedalling over 740 kilometres of cycle paths, covering 18,500 metres of altitude difference and taking on 25 climbs. Created by professional Valais cyclist Steve Morabito, this route will thrill anyone with a taste for discovering the canton from a different angle, over hill and dale. Stretching from Lake Geneva to Oberwald, the ten trails traverse plains, mountains, valleys, towns, vineyards and the banks of the Rhône.

With over 8,000 kilometres of marked paths, hikers are certainly not left by the wayside. They can walk to their hearts’ content, whether it’s scaling mountains, strolling through fragrant larch forests, ambling alongside bisse irrigation canals, exploring historic sites or taking a tour through the vineyards.

A valley of never-ending possibilities, from plains and mountains to vineyards and rugged rock faces, every inch of the canton beckons you to unwind and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. Gastronomy and oenology have an important place in the hearts of Valais people, who love nothing better than sharing a raclette or a glass of wine.
