Peter Sagan at 36: Born to Entertain

26/01/2026

From being the ultimate showman of the peloton to becoming a “full-time dad”. When reminded that some of his former rivals are still racing at the age he turns this Monday, Peter Sagan laughs: “I’m starting to feel old,” he says – though he has no regrets about stepping away from racing early. “What I’m doing now gives me plenty of thrills too”.

Life has changed for Sagan, but not as much as one might think: “The transition to life after racing was planned carefully and with the right timing. I’m still very busy with my personal sponsors — Specialized, 100%, Sportful, MyWhoosh — and with plenty of events around the world. I have to thank my agents, Gabriele Uboldi and Giovanni Lombardi.” Peter even found time to hit the dance floor on a popular Slovak TV show: “It was a fun experience. I stayed physically fit and met a lot of interesting people outside my usual cycling environment”.

Sagan and the Giro: Quality Over Quantity

In a way, Sagan feels that his racing style – especially early in his career – helped shape modern cycling: “I liked putting on a show too, in my own way, just like riders do today”. In a peloton now defined by bold racing, he believes he would have felt right at home. That attacking flair, combined with his sprinting power, delivered 121 professional victories, including two Giro d’Italia stages — one solo, one in a bunch sprint — a Maglia Ciclamino, and multiple wins at Tirreno Adriatico.

I have a special bond with Italy, so those are fantastic memories, and I’m very proud of what I achieved there”. Still, there’s one lingering regret: “I never got to wear the Maglia Rosa. It’s one of the most beautiful and important jerseys in cycling. In the end, my race calendar was decided together with my teams over 15 years, and I never really had the chance to target it”.

A Look at Giro d’Italia 2026

◆ Have you checked out the route for Giro d’Italia 2026? What do you think?

“I’ve looked at it without going too deep into the details, but it seems like a very beautiful and demanding Giro. I’m sure it will deliver great excitement”.

◆ A rider like you could have aimed for the Maglia Rosa in the opening stages in Bulgaria. Do you like the Grande Partenza design?

“Absolutely. The first three stages would have been interesting for a rider with my characteristics, because they could have allowed someone like me to wear the Maglia Rosa. I like seeing the Grand Partenza being held in other European countries, it brings the prestige, charm and spectacle of the Giro d’Italia to fans who don’t often get to experience cycling like that”.
