The Sacra di San Michele is an imposing architectural complex situated on the south side of the Val di Susa in the territory of the municipality of Sant’Ambrogio di Torino, in the Metropolitan City of Turin. It constitutes, among religious buildings, the “symbolic monument of the Piedmont region”. It is also the first stop of the Via Francigena on Italian soil. It was home to a Benedictine community for about 600 years but was later abandoned for about 200 years. From the first half of the 19th century (by order of King Carlo Alberto of Savoy) it was home to the congregation of Rosminian fathers (Antonio Rosmini, founder of the Institute of Charity).

This monumental abbey served as one of the inspirations for the book “The Name of the Rose” by Umberto Eco.
