Francesco Saverio de Sanctis (born in Morra Irpina in 1817 and deceased in Naples in 1883) was a writer and philosopher, literary historian and critic of Italian literature, among the greatest of the 19th century. He dedicated himself to both literary and political endeavours. As a politician, he held the posts of Minister of Public Education of the Kingdom of Italy, Governor of the Province of Avellino, and Deputy of the Kingdom of Italy. As a man of letters, in addition to teaching, Francesco de Sanctis wrote the well-known critical masterpiece Storia della letteratura italiana. It was in this very work that the author wrote the quote “the end justifies the means”, citing it as an example of a misinterpretation of Niccolò Machiavelli’s thought, a phrase that was instead wrongly attributed to Machiavelli himself.
