Vincenzo Nibali announces retirement in his native Messina: “I’m quitting at the end of the year”

11/05/2022

Vincenzo Nibali chose the Giro d’Italia, his native Sicily, and Messina above all, to announce that 2022 will be his last season as a professional.  I think it’s time for me to step aside,” said the Shark. “I wanted to wait until the Giro arrived in Messina, among my family and friends, to make my choice official. Sooner or later this moment had to arrive, it is time to dedicate more space to what I have sacrificed in these years, my family first of all”.

With these words, the winner of the 2013 and 2016 Giro put an end to his extraordinary professional career, which began back in 2005 and was full of honours. The Milano-Sanremo in 2019, the Tour de France 2014, Il Lombardia in 2015 and 2017, the Vuelta a España 2010, the Tirreno-Adriatico 2012 and 2013 and countless other successes, for a total of 54 victories that have handed him straight to the history of cycling, Italian and not only.

However, his season is not over, there are still several months to enjoy his rides and this Giro d’Italia is still in its early stages. Surely the Shark, in his last Corsa Rosa, will still be able to put on a show.

Thank you, Vincenzo.
