Third mural dedicated to Giro d’Italia unveiled in Rome

02/06/2025

The third mural dedicated to the Corsa Rosa was inaugurated today at Rome’s EUR Magliana metro station. The piece was created by Roman artist Daniele Fortuna in collaboration with RCS Sports & Events, Roma Capitale, Atac, and the 9th Municipality.

Among those attending the event were Giro d’Italia winner Simon Yates; Alessandro Onorato, Councillor for Major Events, Sport, Tourism, and Fashion of the City of Rome; Paolo Bellino, CEO and General Manager of RCS Sports & Events; Eugenio Patanè, Councillor for Mobility of the City of Rome; and Claudio Scilletta, Metro Division Director of Atac, and Ludovica Tranquilli, Councillor for Public Works, Suburbs, and the ’15 minute City’.

Dichiarazioni

Daniele Fortunaartist: “The sculpture I created for the Giro d’Italia stems from my desire to portray what this event means to me: strength, love, and future. At its center is the athlete wearing the Maglia Rosa—symbol of excellence and achievement—lifting the trophy, a golden spiral that represents infinity, an eternal journey filled with sacrifice, dreams, and victories. Supporting him are two figures: Eros and a young Hercules. Beside them, two athletes represent all the competitors in this great race, those who bring to life a challenge that’s much more than just a competition—it’s a human journey of courage, determination, and hope. With this work, I wanted to pay tribute not only to the history of the Giro d’Italia, but also to the timeless values it stands for”.

Alessandro OnoratoCouncillor for Major Events, Tourism, Sport, and Fashion of the City of Rome“The Giro d’Italia mural is a valuable legacy for the city. It’s a good practice we’ve been carrying on with RCS for three years: after the metro stations of Marconi and Conca d’Oro, now it’s EUR Magliana’s turn. It shows how major events are a resource—not only because they generate economic impact, new jobs, and promote a modern image of Rome, but also because they leave a tangible legacy in the area. That’s a key aspect we’ve worked to enhance since the start”.

Paolo BellinoCEO and General Manager of RCS Sports & Events: The Giro d’Italia is far more than a sporting competition—it is a cultural treasure, a journey through landscapes, emotions, and values that unite millions of people. This mural—the third created in the Capital—perfectly captures the spirit of the Corsa Rosa: a fusion of art, sport, and community. I would like to thank Roma Capitale, Atac, and the 9th Municipality for sharing this vision with us and for helping leave a concrete and lasting legacy of the Giro’s passage. This work will remain over time and will continue to speak to future generations about the value of this extraordinary event”.

Simon Yates: “The Giro d’Italia is a race that I’ve always loved and it’s nice to have left a tangible mark that will forever remain not only in the history of the Corsa Rosa, but also in the history of Rome. Yesterday I was able to understand what this Maglia Rosa means to people and its importance also on a symbolic level. I didn’t expect to live such an experience, I’m honoured and proud for what I did. Having signed the mural will be one more reason to return to Rome as a tourist and to check that it remains intact”.

Eugenio Patanè, Councillor for Mobility of the City of Rome: “Once again, the Giro d’Italia not only brings sporting prestige to the city but leaves a legacy for residents in the form of upgraded and beautified transport infrastructure. We thank RCS Sport for initiatives like this, which have allowed us to renovate some of the most heavily used hubs in public transportation: first the Marconi metro station, then Conca d’Oro, and this year Magliana”.
