The tweets of the day: Pedersen makes history, what a shame for De Marchi and Clarke!

11/05/2023

Mads Pedersen is no longer a surprise; he has been world champion and has won at all latitudes. Italy was missing and yesterday he won in Naples, joining the small circle of riders who have won in all three Grand Tours: Giro d’Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta. Trek-Segafredo paid him a proper tribute: “In less than a year“.

For those who laugh, there are those who cry. Alessandro De Marchi (Jayco AlUla) and Simon Clarke (Israel-PremierTech) were caught with 300 metres to go and the disappointment was palpable. “It’s a brutal sport… but also fantastic,” wrote Israel after capturing Clarke’s bitterness and his embrace with De Marchi.

Napoli won the Scudetto a few days ago, 33 years after the last one. And so, this morning, during pre-stage operations, some riders challenged each other in dribbling competitions. The winner? Well, easy, Remco Evenepoel, on the strength of his past with the Belgian national football team. The champion seems to have recovered well from yesterday’s crashes.

This morning included a nice confrontation between Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan) and Alberto Dainese (Team DSM) after the incident before the finish line in Salerno.
