The tweets of the day: the casualty count, Thomas and the Giro in Wales

10/05/2023

Salerno Giro 2023

What a stage! Rain and crashes took their toll in the Atripalda-Salerno stage and almost all the teams had to deal with patches and medical checks. Mark Cavendish reassured everyone after the sensational crash at the finish line: “I’m fine, I have no pain. Unfortunately these are the sprints, Dainese already called me, it happens. I will try again”.

Remco Evenepoel is battered after his second crash yesterday, he has pain in his hip and sacrum. “The sixth stage will be tough for him,” said Soudal-QuickStep doctor Toon Cruyt.

Several bruises also for poor Domenico Pozzovivo, such as sore knee, elbow, hip and shoulder.

The man who seemed to have come off worst of all, Andrea Vendrame, who was carried off on a stretcher, may instead be able to start today. For him, a very strong contusion in the clavicle area, but no fractures.

Among those who managed to stay out of trouble was Geraint Thomas, who, after wishing all those who had fallen in the race a speedy recovery, came up with another joke: “Whose idea was it to hold the Giro in Wales?“, referring to the fact that this is certainly not the typical weather in Italy.

Also noteworthy was the tweet from Larry Warbasse (AG2R Citroën): “I’ve swam in less water than we rode through in today’s stage“.
