The tweets of the day: Primož and Remco in 2011, Wouter always in our hearts

09/05/2023

It may sound strange, but in 2011, the biggest contenders for this Giro d’Italia, Remco Evenepoel and Primož Roglič, had hardly even ridden a bike at all. The former was a very young football talent from PSV Eindhoven, the latter was a rather skilled ski jumper.

The Lake Laceno stage was quite intense, especially the initial part with 90 kilometres covered at a thousand miles per hour, between attacks and counter-attacks. Fatigue began to set in, as Intermarché-Circus-Wanty pointed out with a funny vignette: “What a week, huh?” – “Captain, we’re only on Stage 4“.

Since that day 12 years ago, the Giro d’Italia has covered more than 40,000 kilometres. Not a single one without thinking of Wouter Weylandt.
