Stage 2 Preview: race against the clock in Tirana

10/05/2025

After the excitement of the opening stage, the Giro d’Italia 2025 continues with the second day on Albanian soil, which could be the highlight of the three-day event, as an individual time trial takes place on the streets of Tiranë (Tirana). Thousands of fans will flock to the capital’s streets to witness this historic moment for the city.

Space to the specialists

The race will be very fast, with 13.7 km particularly suited to those who specialize in time trials. The only altimetric challenge is located in the middle part of the course: a slight climb of about 1,500 meters with an average gradient of 5% that leads to Sauk. However, this should not hinder the time trialists from battling for the stage win and, who knows, perhaps even the Maglia Rosa, given the limited time gaps from the first stage.

Watch out for young Tarling

More than likely, the key time trialist in this Giro d’Italia is the young Joshua Tarling, who is making his debut in the race. But also watch out for Wout Van Aert, just 4 seconds behind the Maglia Rosa, and European champion Edoardo Affini (Visma | Lease a Bike). And let’s keep an eye on the GC contenders of course. Primož Roglič (Red Bull–Bora-hansgrohe), Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), and Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious) are all riders who have the potential to gain time on their direct rivals. Mads Pedersen (Lidl Trek) could manage to maintain the lead and keep the Maglia Rosa.
