Stage 10 Preview: Race Against the Clock between Lucca and Pisa

20/05/2025

Time trials: you either love them or hate them. Some riders use them to try to win a Grand Tour, others simply brace for damage control. In Stage 10 of the 2025 Giro d’Italia, the spotlight turns to the 28.6 km Lucca–Pisa time trial, a key turning point for the general classification. Coming right after the second rest day, a double-edged sword that recharges some and blocks others, this chrono is anything but straightforward. Having an off day today is not an option: too much precious time is at risk of slipping away on the road to Pisa.

A Trial for Specialists in Pisa

The Lucca–Pisa time trial favors pure specialists, with an almost entirely flat route connecting two of Tuscany’s most beautiful cities.
The stage begins with a partial lap along Lucca’s historic walls, just like in the 1984 prologue won by Francesco Moser, before heading toward Pisa via the Foro di San Giuliano and San Giuliano Terme. Riders will trace the path of the Medicean aqueduct, reach the banks of the Arno River, and follow the road straight to the finish line, set next to the iconic Leaning Tower in Piazza dei Miracoli.

Nuovo ribaltone in classifica generale?

Primož Roglič (Red Bull–Bora–Hansgrohe) has an immediate chance to claw back some of the time lost on the gravel stage, but it will take his very best to put seconds into the UAE Team Emirates–XRG squad, which currently dominates the top of the general classification. Juan Ayuso will aim to stay on his wheel – or perhaps even beat him – while all eyes are on Isaac Del Toro, newly inspired by the Maglia Rosa, to see how he handles this test against the clock. Among the GC contenders, keep a close watch on Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious) as well.

The top favorite for the stage win remains Joshua Tarling (Ineos Grenadiers), a true time trial specialist. But don’t count out European champion Edoardo Affini (Visma | Lease a Bike), Mathias Vacek (Lidl-Trek), or the rejuvenated Wout van Aert (Visma | Lease a Bike), who’s riding high after his triumph in Siena.
