Guerreiro wins stage 9 of the Giro d’Italia, Almeida retains the Maglia Rosa

Ruben Guerreiro (EF Pro Cycling) won Stage 9 of the 103rd Giro d’Italia, 208km from San Salvo to Roccaraso (Aremogna). Breakaway companions Jonathan Castroviejo (Team Ineos Grenadiers) and Mikkel Bjerg (UAE Team Emirates) finished second and third, respectively.

 

João Almeida (Deceuninck – Quick – Step) retains the Maglia Rosa and leads the general classification.

2 – Jonathan Castroviejo (Team Ineos Grenadiers) at 8”

3 – Mikkel Bjerg (UAE Team Emirates) at 58″

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner Ruben Guerreiro said: “Finally, what a great satisfaction after so many second places! The team and I really deserved this victory. It was very difficult to get into the breakaway this morning and it’s extraordinary to win today.”

The Maglia Rosa João Almeida said: “The team did an incredible job, they were perfect and it is thanks to my team-mates that now I still wear the Maglia Rosa. I’m also happy for my compatriot Guerreiro, he deserves the win!
