Rigoberto Urán: the new life of the ever-smiling champion

26/01/2026

A Maglia Rosa worn with genuine affection. Throughout his career, Rigoberto Urán – who celebrates his 39th birthday today – has been defined above all by the Giro d’Italia, the race where he achieved some of the finest results of his career, stepping onto the podium twice with second-place finishes in 2013 and 2014. In the heart of Colombia’s golden generation, the “Bull of Urrao” carved out a special place for himself thanks to his trademark smile, relentless grit and explosive punch, earning him lasting prestige both at home and on European roads.

From Pro Rider to Everyday Life and Colombian Stardom

It has been a year since “Rigo” stepped away from professional cycling, a choice he describes as “calm and conscious, made with balance in mind, involving body, mind and personal life after so many years at the top level.” Only now is the rider from Antioquia beginning to fully grasp the legacy he’s left behind: ” I look back with gratitude and pride. Not just because of the results, but because I represented Colombia with honesty, closeness and joy. It gives me peace knowing that so many people identified with me and with my way of seeing life “.

Speaking exclusively to giroditalia.it shortly after the Christmas break, Urán reflects on his first year away from the peloton: “It’s been a major adjustment process. After nearly twenty years of a very structured life, moving into a freer phase has been exciting and refreshing. I’ve spent a lot of time with my family, on business projects, sporting events and social initiatives in Colombia. Today I have the chance to give back to my country, in different ways, everything that cycling gave me”.

Montasio, Barolo, the Final Podium: The Giro as Rigoberto’s Second Home

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the Giro d’Italia?

“Italy and its people. The Giro has something special – something very human. I remember the Maglia Rosa, brutal mountain stages, rain, cold, and the incredible support from the fans. It’s a race to ride with your legs, but above all with your heart.”

How important were 2013 and 2014, when you reached the podium and won stages (Altopiano del Montasio, Barolo time trial)?

“Those were defining years. Standing on the Giro podium twice confirmed that I could compete with the very best in a Grand Tour. Those seasons gave me confidence, maturity, and the certainty that all the years of sacrifice were worth it.”

Urán on Giro 2026 and the Future of Colombian Cycling

Urán’s affection for the Giro is still crystal clear when asked about the 2026 route: “It’s demanding and true to its history: lots of climbing, technical stages, routes that reward endurance, intelligence and courage. The Giro never gives you anything for free – and that’s exactly what makes it so special”. Would we have seen him at the Grande Partenza in Bulgaria if he were still racing? “It would definitely have been tempting, because the Giro always held a special place in my career”.

Finally, he shares his thoughts on the current wave of Colombian talent: “There’s plenty of it, but what’s needed is more structure, continuity, support and long-term planning. Solid projects that guide young riders from an early age and allow them to grow calmly at the top level. There are many exciting prospects, the talent pool is growing, and I’m sure we’ll see some new surprises in the coming years”.

Happy birthday Rigo, and thank you for everything.
