Simon Yates wins the Giro d’Italia 108. Kooij wins the final stage in Rome

Simon Yates (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) has won the 108th Giro d’Italia. Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates XRG) and Richard Carapaz (EF Education – EasyPost) finished second and third.

The winner of the Giro d’Italia 108, Simon Yates, said: “Honestly it’s still sinking in! What a huge moment in my career… I couldn’t be prouder of the whole team over three weeks. It’s been good that we had the possibility to win the last stage with Olav [Kooij]. So we kept focused till the end. It’s a defining moment of my career, there’s no doubt about that. It’s a sweet success”.

Olav Kooij (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) has won Stage 21, the 143km long Roma-Roma. Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Matteo Moschetti (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team) finished second and third respectively.

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner Olav Kooij said: “We couldn’t wish for a better final weekend. Yesterday it was really amazing for the team. Today I just used everything that was left in the legs. My team-mates made it a lot easier. We had a plan for the sprint although it’s never easy to execute it but we really committed to make it a sprint finish. With Edo [Affini] and Wout [van Aert], we went all in. We were in a perfect position. I was already happy with this Giro. To make it to Rome is really special”.
