Mads Pedersen at 30: “No one is unbeatable and I will continue to prove it”

18/12/2025

The 2019 World Champion – who couldn’t fully enjoy his rainbow jersey due to the COVID pandemic – and one of the most impressive and extraordinary cyclists of recent years, Mads Pedersen turns 30 this Thursday after signing off his best season as a professional. An unstoppable talent whose golden rides in 2025 were admired on the roads of the Giro d’Italia.

The Dane from Lidl-Trek won the Maglia Ciclamino of the 2025 edition of the race with exhibition after exhibition. He was the absolute dominator of the first week, with three stages in the first five days: Tiranë (Tirana), the inaugural stage in Albania; Vlorë (Vlora), the last leg in the Balkans; and Matera, on the fifth day, already in Italian territory. Five days in the Maglia Rosa and a points classification defended from start to finish, crowned with another splendid triumph ahead of Wout Van Aert on Monte Berico, the finish of Tappa 13 in Vicenza.

In the era of ‘super teams’ and without his name being claimed within the famous ‘Big Six’ (Van der Poel, Pogacar, Roglic, Evenepoel, Van Aert, Vingegaard), Pedersen doesn’t need compliments or more confidence: in statements made to giroditalia.it last week, during the Media Day of the team that has given him a contract for life, he shows himself fully aware of his possibilities: “Cycling right now is hard, with a lot of competition, and I have to accept that there are riders with more talent and quality than me, but that doesn’t mean they are unbeatable, and I’ve proven it. And I hope to be able to continue proving it.”

A talent that is based on daily work, and not on the demonstrations that, on the other hand, are increasingly numerous in Pedersen’s palmarès. “Confidence doesn’t come from victories. Rather, it comes from the fact that, before entering a race, I tried to do everything in my power. And when I’ve achieved that, I trust in winning. Even in a Roubaix or a San Remo, when I start against Van der Poel, Van Aert, Ganna… and I’ve done all the perfect preparation, I have the conviction that I can beat those people. I don’t need to have won minor races before the major goals to have that confidence. For me, the big wins are the cherry on top when I’ve done everything correctly.”

Mads Pedersen’s first major goal for the 2026 spring campaign will be Milano-Sanremo. Lidl-Trek will compete with both the Dane and Jonathan Milan, which doesn’t worry him at all. “We get along and there are only two or three days when we race together. At Sanremo, you need the legs to get to the finish line, and if it ends with a sprint and Johnny is there and we can win, I’m not stupid: I know he is faster than me. I want to win a Monument Classic, but my ego won’t stop me from leading out Johnny; I would do it.

His presence, obviously, grants a ‘double threat’ to a Lidl-Trek team which, with its ‘all for all’ style, will surely return to giving fans much joy in RCS Sport races. Happy birthday and good luck for 2026, Mads!
