The first Stage of the Giro d’Italia to include the Széchenyi Chain Bridge in Budapest

20/02/2020

In agreement with the Municipality of Budapest, Stage 1 of the 2020 Corsa Rosa will feature Budapest’s Chain Bridge, the oldest bridge of the city, one of the symbols of the Magyar capital.

The use of the bridge was originally excluded due to planned renovation. The postponement of those works gave the opportunity to modify the route, including the passage of the ITT across the bridge.

On a technical level the stage does not change, with the start from Hősök Tere (Heroes’ Square) and finish in the Castle District, and its length remains the same (8.6km).

THE ROUTE

Budapest – Budapest 8.6km (ITT)A short individual time trial with the first 6km flat and the following 2km uphill. The route goes along wide and mainly straight city streets until it crosses the Széchenyi Chain Bridge before turning around the Buda Castle by crossing the hill in the gallery. Intermediate time is to be taken at the foot of the final climb. The gradient of the first 300m towards the Upper Town exceeds 10% (max 14%) then the climb becomes easier until the finish.
