How we roll into week three: the general classification

26/05/2025

terza settimana

The third week of the 2025 Giro d’Italia kicks off tomorrow. As always in a Grand Tour, this is the decisive stretch, the week that will determine who wears the Maglia Rosa on the final podium in Rome. We’re living an incredibly open edition of the Corsa Rosa, with plenty of riders still in the hunt for the race lead. On this final rest day, it’s time to take a closer look at the general classification before the battle moves to the high mountains.

Isaac Del Toro still in Pink

He’s been wearing it for a week now, ever since his runner-up finish behind Wout van Aert on the stage to Siena. Isaac Del Toro continues to ride in the Maglia Rosa, making a serious bid to become the first Mexican in history to win the Giro d’Italia. After 15 stages, the UAE Emirates XRG rider holds a 1’20” lead over both Britain’s Simon Yates (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) and his own teammate Juan Ayuso. After last year’s triumph with Tadej Pogačar, the Emirati squad is clearly aiming for back-to-back victories in Rome.

Carapaz and Bernal are eyeing a strong third week

The challengers aren’t just sitting back. Richard Carapaz, who had long targeted the Giro d’Italia GC, currently sits fourth overall, 2’07” behind the leader. On the Asiago stage, the EF Education–EasyPost rider showed real aggression, even trying to shake Del Toro on the slopes of Monte Grappa with the help of Egan Bernal. The Colombian, who’s further down the standings in eighth at 3’38”, is hoping to turn things around in the high mountains, his natural terrain. Regardless of how it ends, Bernal’s ride is nothing short of remarkable: back in 2022, he survived a life-threatening training crash, and now he’s once again fighting among the best in a Grand Tour.

Tiberi and Caruso in top-10, the Roglič question mark

There are also two Italians holding spots in the top 10 of the GC: Damiano Caruso and Antonio Tiberi, both flying the flag for Bahrain Victorious. Tiberi was involved in the same crash that forced Giulio Ciccone to abandon, but the rider from Lazio has shown he’s still capable of fighting for a strong result overall.
As for Primož Roglič, question marks remain. The Slovenian crashed on the stage to Siena and hasn’t fully recovered – his struggles on the Asiago stage made that clear, as the effects of the crash continue to linger. With the mountains looming, it’ll be the roads of the third week that decide whether the 2023 Giro winner can still mount a serious challenge for the Maglia Rosa.
