Crashes, attacks and surprise winner Thomas Silva! Stage and Maglia Rosa in Veliko Tarnovo

09/05/2026

We knew Stage 2 of the 2026 Giro d’Italia had the potential to deliver surprises, and it certainly did. In Veliko Tarnovo, history was made as Guillermo Thomas Silva became the first Uruguayan rider ever to win a stage of the Corsa Rosa. The XDS Astana rider, who had already shown promising form in recent races, came out on top from a group of around thirty riders, making perfect use of teammate Christian Scaroni’s work before edging out Florian Stork (Tudor) and Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) in the sprint. And the surprise didn’t end with the stage win. For the 24-year-old from Maldonado, the reward is also the Maglia Rosa, taken from the shoulders of Paul Magnier, who lost contact on the climb to the Lyaskovets Monastery.

The stage was also heavily marked by a major crash with around 20 kilometres to go on a gentle downhill section, with UAE Team Emirates-XRG almost entirely caught up in the incident. Jay Vine and Marc Soler came off worst and were forced to abandon the race, while Adam Yates also crashed heavily, eventually reaching the finish line nearly 14 minutes down and nursing injuries across several parts of his body. Among the other high-profile casualties was Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious), who had to be taken away by ambulance, while Derek Gee-West (Lidl-Trek) managed to continue despite injuries but still lost a minute by the finish.

Calm before the storm

Animating the long 220-kilometre journey from Burgas to Veliko Tarnovo were Mirco Maestri and Diego Pablo Sevilla (Polti VisitMalta), who spent almost the entire day out front, with the Spaniard taking the opportunity to strengthen his grip on the Maglia Azzurra over the Byala Pass and Vratnik Pass.

All eyes had been on the climb to the Lyaskovets Monastery, set to be tackled 10 kilometres from the finish, but the race exploded for all the wrong reasons around 20 kilometres from the line, when a crash — triggered among the UAE riders on rain-slick roads — brought down more than 20 riders, with the roadside barriers inevitably worsening the impact for several of them. The race was neutralised for a few minutes and, once action resumed, Egan Bernal and Thymen Arensman (Netcompany Ineos) picked up 6 and 4 bonus seconds respectively at the Red Bull KM.

On the climb to the Monastery, Davide Piganzoli laid the groundwork for the first real attack of this Giro by Jonas Vingegaard. The Dane pulled clear alongside Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) and Lennert Van Eetvelt (Lotto Intermarché), while behind them a chasing group of around 25 riders began to form. The leading trio plunged into the descent determined to fight for victory in Veliko Tarnovo, carrying an advantage of around 20 seconds, but as the finish approached they began to hesitate and watch each other. That first allowed Jan Christen – virtually the sole survivor for UAE Team Emirates-XRG – to bridge across, before the entire chasing group swept back into contention inside the final 500 metres.
That’s when Christian Scaroni took centre stage, delivering the perfect lead-out to launch teammate Guillermo Thomas Silva to a historic victory — and, from today, the new face of Uruguayan cycling.

STATEMENTS

Just moments after crossing the finish line, stage winner and new Maglia Rosa Guillermo Thomas Silva said: “I’m over the moon. It’s only my second stage at the Giro d’Italia and I’ve already managed to win – and even take the Maglia Rosa. I was feeling good, but I never imagined I could achieve something like this. I have to thank Christian Scaroni, who helped me both in the chase to the leaders and in setting up the sprint. I don’t think I’ll ever forget this day.”
