Each year, the Giro d’Italia‘s passage through the Dolomites and the majestic transalpine mountains aims to be more than just a source of epic memories. It is also an opportunity to leave a positive legacy in the places that make the race so iconic.

In 2018, Storm Vaia destroyed millions of trees across Trentino, Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia. These regions, regularly crossed by the Corsa Rosa and renowned for their landscapes of extraordinary natural value, last April witnessed a coordinated effort designed to give back to the territories that have given so much to the race over the years. Today, on Tuesday, 28 July, International Nature Conservation Day, we celebrate that commitment and its lasting impact.

More than 200 volunteers, fans and local businesses, coordinated by the E.R.I.C.A cooperative, came together to plant 3,000 new trees in three of the hardest-hit areas, the very same areas crossed by Stages 17, 19 and 20 this past May. The initiative is part of the partnership between the Giro d’Italia and VAIA, a forest regeneration project that became the race’s Sustainability Partner in 2025. The planting days in Darzo, Canazei, and Claut demonstrated that the soil supporting riders through the mountains can also be regenerated through the collective efforts inspired by the race.

That same spirit runs through Ride Green, the sustainability programme that has accompanied the Giro d’Italia stage by stage since 2016. In 2025 alone, the initiative enabled the recycling of 92% of the more than 70,000 kilograms of waste generated along the race route through Italy. The Corsa Rosa continues to demonstrate that caring for the soil beneath its wheels is not a one-off gesture, but a fundamental part of its identity.
