FantaGiro week 1 recap: Pogačar Maglia Rosa even at Fanta

13/05/2024

The first rest day for the Giro d’Italia 2024 is the right time take a good look at what’s going on on the FantaGiro d’Italia, the official fantasy game of the Corsa Rosa, designed and produced in collaboration between RCS Sport and Team FantaSanremo, which has already reached the extraordinary milestone of 95,000 registered teams.

In line with the situation of the Giro, which after the first nine stages is showing Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) in the role of the undisputed ruler, the FantaGiro d’Italia also sees the Slovenian champion firmly at the top of the provisional general classification with an impressive 618 points. Pogačar widely outdistanced Daniel Martinez (Bora – Hansgrohe), second in the classification with 216 points, and Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), third with 195 points. Completing the top ten of the provisional FantaGiro d’Italia classification are Jonathan Milan (Lidl – Trek) with 170 points, Jhonatan Narvaez (Ineos Grenadiers) with 149, and Olav Kooj (Team Visma – Lease a Bike) with 147, Cian Uijtdebroeks (Team Visma – Lease a Bike) with 124, Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal – Quickstep) with 121, Tim Merlier (Soudal – Quickstep) with 120 and Filippo Fiorelli (Vf Group – Bardiani – Csf – Faizané) with 113 points.

Subscriptions to the FantaGiro d’Italia will be possible until 25 May on the website fantagiroditalia.it. By doing so, users will take part in the draw for fantastic prizes: digital edition subscriptions to the Gazzetta dello Sport, plush Wolfie by Trudi, gift cards for GiroStore in collaboration with All4Cycling, the Special Jerseys produced by Castelli to celebrate the most iconic stages of the Giro 2024, the Giro d’Italia 2024 Jerseys autographed by their winners and a splendid Colnago V4Rs, Tadej Pogačar’s bike.

Inevitably, the most selected rider up to this point is Tadej Pogačar, the big favourite for the overall victory of the Giro d’Italia. The Slovenian champion has been included in 53.4% of the teams created so far. Completing the podium of the most used riders are the two Italians Jonathan Milan and Filippo Ganna, who were selected in 25.6% and 23.9% of the teams respectively.

The FantaCoaches are also placing particular trust in Antonio Tiberi (chosen in 17.4% of the teams), Geraint Thomas (14.6%), Florian Lipowitz (present in 13.7% of the teams but retired after stage 5), Juan Pedro Lopez (13.1%), Damiano Caruso (11.7%), Domenico Pozzovivo (11.7%) and Giulio Pellizzari (11%).

Tadej Pogačar also tops the list of the most-selected captain, a crucial role as the points earned based on the order of arrival of each stage will be doubled. The UAE Team Emirates leader was selected captain in 51.3% of the teams created. Considerably more distant Geraint Thomas, selected as leader in 7.8% of the teams, Jonathan Milan selected in 4.8% of the teams, Filippo Ganna with 4.6%, Damiano Caruso with 3.5%, Romain Bardet and Ben O’Connor with 2.5%, Daniel Martinez with 2.3%, Nairo Quintana and Cian Uijtdebroeks with 1.8%.

The most fun way to play the FantaGiro d’Italia, sharing the passion for cycling with friends, colleagues and family, is by forming or participating in a league. Excellent in this respect is the figure for the number of leagues created, over 6,200. Among these are the leagues of the fantasy game partners: La Gazzetta dello Sport, Colnago, Marca, All4Cycling, Zondacrypto, Drivalia and Club Corriere.

Demonstrating the interest aroused by the Giro d’Italia and its FantaGiro d’Italia at an international level is the interesting data regarding the country of residence of the approximately 64,000 fantallenatori who have registered for the game so far. 53.6% of them are Italian, but the remaining 40% cover all seven continents. Among the most involved nations are France with 9% of users, Spain with 7.6%, Colombia with 3.9%, the United Kingdom with 3%, Portugal with 2.4%, Belgium with 2.1%, the United States with 1.8% and Denmark with 1.7%.
