An Ever-Open Wound: 9 Years Without Michele Scarponi

22/04/2026

The last image we have of Michele Scarponi at the Giro d’Italia is alongside his friend Vincenzo Nibali, in that magical edition when, together, over the course of two days, they turned the race in favor of the Sicilian rider. On the Pinerolo–Risoul stage, Scarponi was in the breakaway, alone at the front, heading toward what would very likely have been a stage victory, after six years without a win at the Corsa Rosa and three without a victory overall.

But behind him, team leader Nibali launched his attack and began his assault on the Maglia Rosa. For Michele, there was no doubt, no hesitation, no selfishness: he stopped and waited for Vincenzo, giving up any personal glory, and propelled the Shark toward success. In a career full of achievements – including the 2011 Giro d’Italia and three stage wins – the Risoul stage of 2016 is the one that best captures the rider and, above all, the man that Scarponi was.

Nine years ago, one of the most beloved riders ever passed away suddenly, just days before tackling his 12th Giro d’Italia. He was 37 and had his whole life ahead of him. Selfless, cheerful, irreverent. A father, a husband, a son, and a friend. A positive presence for anyone around him, on the bike and off. “The best are always the ones who leave us”. With Michele, this has never felt more true.
