The San Giovanni in Venere Abbey (municipality of Fossacesia) is a Christian monastery complex located on a hill in a panoramic position overlooking the Adriatic Sea. The complex dates back to the 13th century and consists of a basilica and a convent. On the outside, the solid structure of the church can be admired, made of sandstone blocks at the base and bricks at the top. Facing west, the Moon Gate (main doorway) lets in light during the summer solstice at sunset, illuminating the interior of the church as far as the presbytery and the crypt. To the east, facing the sea, the openings on the three apses, crossed by the sun’s rays during the winter solstice, are called the Sun Gate.

The reference to Venus may stem from the presence of a Roman temple dedicated to the goddess Venus, which young people would visit when approaching marriage.
