tourist info

The town of Bergamo is divided and known for its two distinct parts, the “Upper Town” and the “Lower Town“, which are separated by the Venetian Walls, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017. Bergamo is nicknamed “the city of the Thousand” due to the remarkable number of volunteers from Bergamo (around 180) who were part of Garibaldi’s expedition during the Italian struggle for independence.

The Upper Town, with its ramparts erected in the 16th century, during Venetian rule, has medieval origins. In Piazza Vecchia, the main square in the upper part of the city, at 10 p.m. sharp, the Civic Tower (Campanone) strikes a number of tolls (usually 100, but sometimes even more), which in the past announced the closing of the gates to Bergamo Alta along the city walls.
