tourist info

Cividale del Friuli was founded by Julius Caesar with the name Forum Iulii, after which the whole region was named, and later became the capital of the Lombard duchy of Friuli. It stretches over the Natisone river, crossed by the two-arched bridge that is the symbol of the town, the Ponte del Diavolo (Devil’s Bridge), from which you enjoy the stunning view overlooking the gorge.

Close to the Slovenian border, the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Castelmonte houses one of the oldest surviving documents in Slovenian, the Castelmonte Manuscript, written at the end of the 15th century and containing the main Christian prayers (Our Father, Hail Mary and Creed).
