tourist info

Rocca Calascio (L’Aquila) is a mountaintop fortress consisting of a castle and an adjacent medieval village, about 3 km outside the town of Calascio. The castle stands at about 1460 metres, thus being among the highest in Italy and Europe, and is considered one of the symbols of Abruzzo. The fortress, in a barycentric position between the Campo Imperatore plateau and those of Navelli and Tirino, is part of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park.

Rocca Calascio has been used several times as a film set. Perhaps the best-known example dates back to 1986, with the setting of the exterior scenes of “The Name of the Rose” starring Sean Connery.
