    Van der Poel wins stage 7 of the Tirreno-Adriatico, S. Yates retains the Maglia Azzurra

    Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin – Fenix) has won Stage 7 of the 55th edition of the Tirreno-Adriatico EOLO, 181km from Pieve Torina to Loreto, ahead of Ruben Guerreiro (EF Pro Cycling) and Matteo Fabbro (Bora – Hansgrohe). Simon Yates (Mitchelton – Scott) retains the Maglia Azzurra of the leader of the GC ahead of tomorrow’s final ITT in San Benedetto del Tronto.

    Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner Mathieu van der Poel, said: “It was an incredible stage, much tougher than I expected. The team did a great job getting me into the break. I knew I had to go full gas on the last climb before the finish, Fabbro who was ahead of me and when I passed him I knew I had won. I am very happy for this victory that I have been looking for since the beginning of the Tirreno-Adriatico.”

    Simon Yates, the Maglia Azzurra, said: “It was a hard stage, the team did a great job controlling the race. The race will be decided by the ITT. My main focus are Thomas and Majka, I think especially Majka is very good against the clock.”
