Mads Pedersen is no longer a surprise; he has been world champion and has won at all latitudes. Italy was missing and yesterday he won in Naples, joining the small circle of riders who have won in all three Grand Tours: Giro d’Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta. Trek-Segafredo paid him a proper tribute: “In less than a year“.

For those who laugh, there are those who cry. Alessandro De Marchi (Jayco AlUla) and Simon Clarke (Israel-PremierTech) were caught with 300 metres to go and the disappointment was palpable. “It’s a brutal sport… but also fantastic,” wrote Israel after capturing Clarke’s bitterness and his embrace with De Marchi.
