The tweets of the day: One day to go for Thomas, Tao’s support, the GEEro d’Italia

26/05/2023

With the Dolomite stage behind him, there is only one hurdle left for Geraint Thomas on his way to winning the Maglia Rosa, Mount Lussari. In a few hours the Welshman could (unofficially) be the winner of the Giro d’Italia 2023. He is well aware of this himself, given his tweet from yesterday evening.

First he took a nice selfie: “Cheers for a lovely day out, Dolomites. Only the three hour drive to the hotel now”. Then he thanked the team: “you’d never guess we were missing three men today. Wouldn’t be in this position without Salva, Swifty, De Pluskie and Thymen”.Finally, he posted a couple of beautiful photos of the ascent to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo: “Wouldn’t say I enjoyed it, but that final climb was pretty special. Grazie Giro”.

From home also came encouragement from Tao Geoghegan Hart, who posted a GIF with the Pink Panther: “Go Geraint! Amazing work by all the team. One more stage”.

And speaking of Geoghegan Hart, do you remember when he asked the Italian fans for a Fossombrone jersey in exchange for an Ineos jersey autographed by the entire team? Well, it was just delivered to him.

This year’s is truly a GEEro d’ITALIA. Derek Gee was once again in the breakaway in the Tre Cime di Lavaredo stage, sold his skin dearly, but finished 2nd, again, his fourth time in this Giro. At the finish the disappointment was great, which is understandable. But what he has done in these three weeks will remain forever, he was probably the most beautiful revelation of this Giro d’Italia, and it is only a matter of time before victory comes.
