The tweets of the day: Berwick dreams of Bradbury, Huys sings and breaks away

18/05/2023

It was another breakaway day in Rivoli, with Nico Denz (Bora-hansgrohe) managing to outsprint Toms Skujiņš (Trek-Segafredo) and Sebastian Berwick (Israel-Premier Tech). The latter, interviewed after the finish, admitted to be a long way from winning, being the weaker one in sprinting. “You never know what happens. Steven Bradbury and all that” said Berwick, referring to his compatriot who won the gold medal in short track at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, solely due to his opponents’ continuous falls.

The riders enjoyed themselves before the start in Bra. Belgian Laurens Huys (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) grabbed the mike and sang “Sarà perché ti amo“. He then joined the day’s breakaway and finished in a good 11th place.

And so did Davide Formolo (UAE Team Emirates), who is now steadly in charge of introducing his team on stage. The Veronese obviously glorified Pascal Ackermann after his victory in Tortona and his lead-out man Ryan Gibbons. He too then joined the breakaway, closing in 12th.
