Tadej Pogačar has confirmed his presence at the Giro d’Italia 2024. The Slovenian rider, currently leading the UCI World Ranking, will line up at the Grande Partenza in Piedmont off the back of a strong start to his season.

Giro d’Italia 2024 will be Pogi’s debut Corsa Rosa, and will be joined by UAE Team Emirates  teammates Rui Oliveira, Mikkel Bjerg, Felix Großschartner, and fellow countrymen Domen Novak.

POGAČAR AT THE GIRO D’ITALIA, WHAT TO EXPECT

Despite coming out empty-handed from the last two Tour de France, the Komenda native approaches La Corsa Rosa as favorite off the back of a strong start to the season: Pogi triumphed in Italy at the Strade Bianche (March 2nd) and at the Liegi-Bastogne-Liegi.

GIRO + TOUR DE FRANCE DOUBLE: IS IT POSSIBLE?

Impossible is not a word that belongs to the 25-year-old Pogačar, as a cyclist of his caliber is capable of potentially winning every stage of the Giro d’Italia.

However, only a select club of six legendary cyclists have managed to pull off the Giro d’Italia and Tour the France in the same season, making this challenge a particularly fascinating one.

The past double winners are:

  • Eddy Merckx (4)
  • Bernard Hinault (3)
  • Fausto Coppi (2)
  • Jacques Anquetil (2)
  • Stephen Roche (1)
  • Marco Pantani (1)

With Chris Froome and Tom Dumoulin coming agonizingly close in recent years, Pogačar looks like the most credible candidate with the credentials to plausibly pull off the most fascinating Grand Tour double.

Will Pogi succeed in becoming the first to win the Giro and the Tour in the same season after Marco Pantani in 1998?
