Today’s stage of the Giro d’Italia
Stage 18: Borgo Valsugana-Treviso (156 km)
The route
Stage that joins the Valsugana with the Venetian plain through the passage of the Primolano stairs, the only harshness of the day along with the Ca’ del Poggio Wall. We then arrive in Treviso via generally wide straight roads. Of note are the numerous urban crossings with their array of traffic circles, traffic dividers and street furniture. In Treviso the race tackles a circuit of about 15 km to be repeated once.
The last kilometres
Final circuit on wide, flat roads except for a short section between 4 and 2 km from the finish that is slightly narrower. Only one challenging bend at 3 km to go. Last 2 km wide with last turn at about 1200 m from finish (asphalt).
Who will be the protagonists?
Today’s will be the last chance for the sprinters to try to make their mark in this Giro d’Italia. In fact, the climbs and descents in the central part of the stage are not frightening, and the brevity of the stage makes it fairly easy to control. It remains to be seen, however, whether or not the breakaway that disengages will be dangerous for the peloton. Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ) will be able to ride light-heartedly having already three wins under his belt, with Mark Cavendish (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) stuck at just one win. More pressure will be on Fernando Gaviria’s (UAE team Emirates) shoulders, but also watch out for Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious), Alberto Dainese (Team DSM) and Simone Consonni (Cofidis).
