Primož Roglič abandons the Giro d’Italia during the San Valentino di Brentonico stage

27/05/2025

Primoz Roglic

Primož Roglič has been forced to abandon the Giro d’Italia 2025. The Slovenian rider, winner of the 2023 edition, started this year’s race as one of the top favorites to wear the Maglia Rosa in Rome. However, during today’s demanding stage to San Valentino di Brentonico, the Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe leader was ultimately forced to withdraw.

The crash and Roglič’s withdrawal

The bad weather has made life difficult for the peloton throughout this Stage 16. Roglič had lined up at the start this morning despite widespread speculation during the rest day about a possible withdrawal, due to injuries sustained in the Siena stage crash.

He gave it a try, but midway through today’s stage, he was involved in another crash – this time alongside Richard Carapaz – and eventually had to wave the white flag. A disappointing end to a Giro that began with high hopes.

Other riders have also been forced to abandon the race today. Joshua Tarling (INEOS Grenadiers) crashed early on while navigating a roundabout, and Alessio Martinelli (VF Group–Bardiani CSF–Faizanè) suffered a heavy fall on a descent.
