Happy Birthday Garzo!

16/07/2020

Born in Varese on 16 July 1973, Stefano Garzelli was a pro rider from 1997 to 2013. In 2000, riding for Mercatone Uno, he achieved his most important career victory by winning the 83rd edition of the Giro d’Italia, and came close to the double in 2003 when he finished second. During his career Garzelli won seven stages of the Corsa Rosa between 2000 and 2010 and the King of the Mountains Classification twice (2011 and 2009). His palmares also includes victory in the Tirreno-Adriatico, the Tour de Suisse and two editions of the Tre Valli Varesine.

The Varese rider, nicknamed “ll Garzo”, raced the Giro d’Italia for the first time in 1997, finishing ninth. The images of his success at the Giro 2000 are unforgettable. Garzelli won with thanks to climbing help from Marco Pantani, before conquering the Maglia Rosa in the last ITT. Another great moment was his part in the Mapei 1-2 at Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 2002: after a 60km escape, Garzelli finished second behind his teammate Paolo Bettini.
