From the Giro d’Italia to the Classics: Luca Guercilena’s Vision

08/09/2026

The new Head of Cycling at RCS Sport, Luca Guercilena, has shared his vision for the future of the company’s major races: greater international reach, an increased ability to attract fans, teams and partners from around the world, and an even more prominent role for these events in the global professional cycling landscape. The Giro d’Italia looks to the future under new leadership. After a long career in international cycling, Luca Guercilena has taken charge of the Corsa Rosa with a clear objective: to consolidate its global prestige and further strengthen its position on the world sporting stage.

In interviews published today by Corriere della Sera and La Gazzetta dello Sport, Guercilena discussed the significance of this new challenge and the ideas that will shape his work in the coming years. His experience at the highest levels of professional cycling, first as a coach and later as the manager of one of the most successful teams in the WorldTour, provides the foundation for leading one of Italy’s most iconic sporting events. One of the key themes emerging from his comments is the desire to increase the Giro’s international appeal while preserving its distinctive identity. In Guercilena’s view, the Corsa Rosa is already a globally recognized asset, yet there remains room to further enhance its attraction for fans, teams, sponsors and international markets.

Another central topic is the comparison with the other Grand Tours. While acknowledging the strength of the Tour de France, the new director emphasized the importance of enhancing the Giro’s unique identity rather than following existing models. The goal is to strengthen the elements that make the Italian race special: its connection with the territory, the diversity of its routes, its ability to combine tradition and innovation, and the enduring passion it inspires across generations. His vision also includes potential technical and organizational developments. From balancing time trials and mountain stages to designing routes capable of delivering excitement and unpredictability, Guercilena envisions a modern, competitive Giro that is increasingly engaging for both fans and riders, while never losing sight of two fundamental principles: safety and inclusivity.

His words also reflect an awareness of the responsibility attached to an event that represents far more than a sporting competition. Over the decades, the Giro has told the story of Italy through its landscapes, legendary climbs and the exploits of great champions. The task of the new leadership will be to guide its growth in an increasingly international cycling environment without losing the soul that has made it one of the world’s most beloved races.
