Cycling in Abruzzo, great emotions on two wheels

16/05/2022

Are you keen on two wheels? Abruzzo is the ideal destination for you, thanks to the presence of hundreds of kilometres of cycle paths, mountain bike trails and downhill circuits between hills and mountains – partly ready to use and partly under construction – as well as many itineraries on the road.
The uncontaminated nature, the wilderness that makes the Abruzzo landscape unique, the protected areas, the villages, the archaeological and artistic sites, the places of the spirit, the food and wine excellence: Abruzzo is a region that surprises and is appreciated even more at the slow pace of a bike.
A partire dai suoi oltre 130 km di litorale lungo i quali si snoda un’unica pista ciclabile, la Bike to Coast, che fa parte della Ciclovia Adriatica nazionale che collegherà Trieste alla Puglia.

The Teramano coast offers beaches of fine golden sand, centuries-old pine forests and all the charm of the Torre Del Cerrano, one of the oldest coastal towers in the Kingdom of Naples, now home to the homonymous marine protected area. After Pescara with its futuristic Ponte Del Mare, the Chieti coast between Ortona and San Salvo is dotted with cliffs and gravel coves, corners of paradise ideal for a break in absolute peace. We are on the Via Verde of the Costa dei Trabocchi, which owes its name to the presence of ancient wooden fishing machines suspended over the sea, which today in most cases host picturesque restaurants where you can taste the seafood dishes of the tradition. Pedalling pushed by the sea breeze, enjoying the view of the Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere in Fossacesia, a masterpiece of medieval sacred architecture, or the natural reserves of Lecceta in Torino di Sangro and Punta Aderci in Vasto, is an experience that fills the heart.

Looking at inland Abruzzo, if you like trying some gentle climbs, there are exciting itineraries from the coast towards the harshness of the highest peaks in the Apennines. You could find yourself pedalling immersed in the vineyards of the Tritana Valley, between the provinces of Pescara and L’Aquila, or along the clear and turquoise waters of the Tirino River, one of the cleanest in Europe. Alternatively, you could test yourself in the soft roundness of the Teramo Hills, perhaps stopping to taste a glass of excellent Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.
You will certainly be amazed by the evocative colours of the Sant’Antonio Wood and by the boundless views of the Altipiani Maggiore d’Abruzzo. Along this route you will cross several times the historic Sulmona-Isernia railway, the second highest line in Italy over 1200 m above sea level at the Rivisondoli-Pescocostanzo station: it is the fascinating Parks Railway better known as the Trans-Siberian of Italy that runs on the tracks among breath-taking landscapes aboard wonderful carriages dating back to the 30s and 50s.

Do not miss the fairy-tale sceneries of Scanno, with its romantic heart-shaped lake, and Campotosto with its panoramic view of the impressive Gran Sasso d’Italia and Monti Della Laga. Finally, allow yourself the opportunity to retrace the streets of memory by biking on the historic Gustav Line, following the Sangro path up to Alfedena and then towards the lake of Barrea and the sources of the river, in the heart of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, for a journey on two wheels with truly endless emotions.
