tourist info

The Furlo Pass is a gorge on the ancient Roman road Via Flaminia, located in the province of Pesaro-Urbino in the municipalities of Fermignano, Fossombrone, Cagli and Acqualagna (in the Marche region). It is a fascinating canyon, formed between the Pietralata and Paganuccio mountains by the erosive force of a tributary of the Metauro river.

The gorge, recognised as one of the places of the heart by the National Trust of Italy (FAI), is crossed by the original route of the Via Flaminia, modified (in Vespasian’s time) with the excavation of a tunnel to “facilitate” passage for equipment and people. This tunnel was built at the narrowest point of the gorge and was for this reason nicknamed ‘Petra pertusa’ or ‘Forulum’ (small hole), from which today’s term ‘Furlo’ derives. This tunnel is still active today and travelled by cars.
