Like a stone thrown in a lake

04/02/2021

Less than three months since the closing of the one and only autumn Giro d’Italia on October 25, now it is already time to introduce the 104th edition, which is back to the springtime – its original schedule.

After the Grande Partenza (the opening ITT) on May 8 in Turin, Piedmont will also be hosting stages two and three: Stupinigi – Novara and Biella – Canale, respectively.

The first three stages are like ripples in a lake after a stone is thrown in the water, starting from the centre of Turin, and spreading out in bigger circles, growing in length and complexity.

The first circle is rightfully narrow – 9 kilometres on flat and fast-running roads, which will award the first Maglia Rosa.

The second circle will start right south of Turin, in front of the famous Palazzina di Caccia (hunting lodge) of Stupinigi, extending for 173 kilometres all the way to Novara – most likely a sprinter’s thing.

The third circle will take the peloton to the hills of Montferrat and Langhe – a spectacular stage of 187 kilometres, with a challenging route and a compelling finale, up to the very last bit.

The Giro d’Italia had already set off from Turin in 1961 and in 2011, celebrating the 100th and the 150th anniversary of the Italian Unification.

And it is no coincidence that it does, again, this year, after leaving behind the weirdest and hardest season in the history of this race, fighting and reinventing itself just as we all did.

Turin was the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy, with Palazzo Carignano being the first Italian Parliament, where Cavour and Garibaldi used to seat.

The opening time trial will start from nearby Piazza Castello. The 2021 Giro d’Italia will set off just a few metres from where our country was born, proving once again that Italy and the Corsa Rosa are one, as they have been for 104 editions.

That’s spring returning after fall.

A renaissance after a difficult year.

A resurgence gradually spreading like the ripples in a lake, and reaching all of Italy.
