Giro d’Italia Awards 2021: Amore Infinito

22/06/2021

With his stunning accomplishment on the Passo Giau, Egan Bernal had already won the Best Attack award. Today, that same feat has earned him the Amore Infinito Prize as well.

The riders had been racing under the rain since the start that day. They had cleared the Passo La Crosetta, travelled up the valley floor all the way to Selva di Cadore and ultimately tackled the Cima Coppi on the Giau, all drenched in rain.

To protect themselves from the wind and the showers, they had been wearing their rain jackets all day long, which would conceal their identity and dull any colour. And all that was happening on a day when the live footage was missing because of the mist at the foot of the closing climb.

That was a wonderful stage, although told in black and white.

When Egan Bernal eventually came into view 300 metres before the finish in Cortina, caught on camera, he was still wearing his black rain jacket. But his true colours were about to shine through.

What he did then was so beautiful that it has earned him this prize.

He took the time to unzip and remove his rain jacket (thus losing 3, 4, 5 seconds to Caruso and Bardet, who were not that far behind), to show the world how beautiful it was to win wearing the Maglia Rosa.

A memorable moment of endless love – Amore Infinito.
