Egan Bernal, the new Maglia Rosa

1st stage win in a Grand Tour for Egan Bernal. It’s the 30th stage victory for Colombian riders at the Giro d’Italia.

Egan Bernal is the fifth Colombian to wear the Maglia Rosa, after Rigoberto Uran, Nairo Quintana, Fernando Gaviria and Esteban Chaves. Combined, they have worn the leader’s jersey 16 times so far.

Even though Attila Valter slipped into 5th overall, the top 3 continues to be made up of riders under the age of 26, who therefore qualify to compete for the Maglia Bianca: Egan Bernal, Remco Evenepoel and Aleksandr Vlasov.

Speaking at the press conference, the stage winner and Maglia Rosa Egan Bernal said: “It’s been two difficult years for me, mentally and physically. To win again is important for me and for the team. I thought there were still riders ahead. I was completely focused. I was in my own world. I became very emotional when I was told I had won. The last 1.5km on the gravel road was four minutes of pure suffering, without looking at the other riders. I still have some doubts about my back. I undergo physio treatment before and after each stage. For now, I just want to enjoy this win and the Maglia Rosa.

Stage 10, L'Aquila - Foligno, 139km

A short, rolling stage with a pan-flat finale. The route first takes in climbs up to Sella di Corno and Forca di Arrone, and then tackles one last ascent up to Valico della Somma (awarding KOM points). The route eventually levels out in the final part, running on broad and mostly straight roads. As the stage passes through several urban areas, roundabouts, traffic islands and street furniture will be found along the route.

Final KMs

The final kilometres are quite straight, up to 2,000m to the finish. Here the route features a right- hand bend, immediately followed by two left hand bends that lead to the home stretch (at 1,300m out), with just a slight half-turn 500m before the finish line, on tarmac road.
