The Route
The stage has a very wavy profile. It starts by taking in the constant undulations of the Julian Prealps, and finishes with a closing circuit around San Daniele del Friuli. For the first 150 km, the route undulates continuously, taking in three fairly challenging categorised climbs, all the way to the closing circuit. The first climb, Madonnina del Domm, is the longest and steepest one, whereas the following ones (Monte Spig and Monteaperta), despite reaching double-digit peaks, are shorter. The stage is played out on relatively wide mountain roads and on straight, large roads along the plain. In Majano, the route enters the closing circuit and covers almost one full lap before passing over the finish line. The peloton takes in the steep ramp leading to the castle of Susans (approx. 1 km, with rising gradients topping out at 16%). After a short descent and a brief flat drag, the route climbs up Monte di Ragogna (2.8 km with avg. 10.4% and max. 16% gradients), which will be crested twice more during the two laps. After a short, steep descent, the route approaches the finish following the wavy profile.
Final kilometres
With 3 km to go, the route enters the urban area of San Daniele, taking in a few punchy bits. The last one is at the final kilometre, in Via Sottomonte (max. 20%). A short descent then leads into the 200 m home straight, on 6.5 m tarmac, with a 10% gradient.

Overview
Udine is a town in the center of Friuli Venezia Giulia, a privileged geographical position, surrounded by hills, close to the sea and the mountains, not far from Austria and Slovenia, in the center of Europe. Its origin is ancient but its looks were shaped under the rule of the Republic of Venice, which began in 1420 and lasted for more than three centuries. The town is marked by squares surrounded by porticoes and colorful buildings that enhance its soul.
In the eighteenth century the painter Giambattista Tiepolo (1696-1770) lived and reached his artistic maturity here: his masterpieces can now be admired in the Gallerie del Tiepolo of the Palazzo dei Patriarchi, in the Duomo and in the Oratorio della Purità.
Udine is a city-lounge, where the finest palates can enjoy its ancient taverns and its wine bars where they can have a tajut (glass of wine) and local specialties.
During the month of September the city hosts “Friuli DOC”: a journey into the most inviting taste and flavors of Friuli Venezia Giulia, a real mix of wines, food, events and offer to a visitor an excellent opportunity to appreciate this rich and hospitable land.
Udine has also a very lively university, full of activities and cultural proposals for all tastes and for every season.
Food
The Friulian cuisine is characterized by hearty dishes such as polenta, frico, soups and minestrone, cured meat products, sausages (like musetto), brovada (turnips preserved in marc) and game, usually served with white wine (taj di blanc) or red ( taj di neri). The region is also famous for his cheese and for the prosciutto of San Daniele.
An assortment of local dishes, can be enjoyed in the seasonal festivals organized in the various villages, as well as in the traditional taverns and trattorias of Udine.
Drink
Udine is located in the “Friuli Grave” DOC area, which ranks first among the Denominations of Friuli Venezia Giulia with a production of over 300,000 hectoliters, equal to almost 50% of the total.
In the “Grave”, as in all Friulian viticulture, the wine bears the name of the grape from which it originates.
The wines of the white grape varieties are fresh, fruity and elegant; harmonious and fragrant reds when young, full and structured if aged.
Points of interest
The ideal starting point to visit Udine is the beautiful Piazza Libertà, the heart of the town, overlooked by the Loggia del Lionello, a Venetian Gothic work, dating back to the 1400s, the Loggia di San Giovanni and the Torre dell’Orologio, both from the sixteenth century.
Looking up, you can admire the Castle of Udine, symbol of Friuli, the former the seat of the patriarch of Aquileia and the Venetian Lieutenant of the Homeland of Friuli. The building dominates the city from above and over the centuries it was first used as a fortified structure (the first news dates back to 938) and then as a barracks. Currently the Castle houses the Risorgimento Museum, the Archaeological Museum, the Ancient Art Gallery and the Museum of Photography.
Via Mercatovecchio winds its way from Piazza Libertà, the historic Friulian shopping center embellished with historic buildings such as the pawnshop and the Santa Maria del Monte chapel, to reach the seventeenth-century Bartolini palace.
The stop in the premises of Piazza San Giacomo, also know as Piazza delle Erbe, is unmissable for the people of Udine. Piazza delle Erbe was named after the market that has been held there since 1800. It is marked by a central rise and by the arcades that surround it on three sides.
But Udine is also the city of Tiepolo, one of the greatest painters of the eighteenth century.It was his second home, after Venice. During his staying in Udine he had a countless production, the most important is undoubtedly the cycle of frescoes in the gallery of the Palazzo Patriarcale (now the seat of the archiepiscopal curia). Works by Tiepolo can also be found in the city’s cathedral, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore, a 14th-century structure, and in the nearby Oratorio della Purità.
San Daniele del Friuli
Overview
For the first time in history, the Giro d’Italia will arrive in San Daniele del Friuli, a town located in the heart of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and which, despite its small size, is one of the most important villages in the region. Here, in fact, the homonymous prosciutto famous in Italy and in the world is produced. The history that characterizes the town is also rich: since the Roman times it was a commercial crossroads with Central and Eastern Europe and in the following ages it consolidated its attitude.
Food
The city of San Daniele del Friuli is famous and known all over the world for the main product of Friuli-Venezia Giulia: the San Daniele DOP. An Italian product that originates from Italian pork legs worked and seasoned only and exclusively in this municipality. The perfect microclimatic conditions allow the pig legs to mature to perfection to obtain San Daniele, a Protected Designation of Origin product since 1996. In the municipal area there are only thirty-one producers of the over 2 million and 600 thousand hams, which follow the strict production disciplinary. Prosciutto di San Daniele is made with only three ingredients: pork legs, sea salt and the particular microclimate of this city. It is a totally natural product, free of preservatives, nitrites and nitrates. For its high nutritional value and easy digestibility, guaranteed by a maturation of not less than 13 months, Prosciutto di San Daniele DOP is indicated in any diet, and is an excellent source of noble and high quality proteins, vitamins and minerals. Prosciutto di San Daniele is eaten sliced thin at the moment, or used in numerous preparations such as “Tagliolini alla San Daniele”, a typical and characteristic dish of the town. In the numerous prosciutterie there is San Daniele sliced with a knife but skilled cutters who present tastings of prosciutto of various ages.
The city of ham, however, is also known for other typical products of the area such as smoked trout. Along the banks of the Tagliamento river there is a small river trout farm, it is a family-run niche company that produces the “Queen of San Daniele”. In the numerous taverns and restaurants of the town you can find tasty dishes based on ham and smoked trout accompanied by excellent Friulian wines from the area and other important dishes of local culture such as frico, a potato pie and melted cheese. In San Daniele del Friuli the King (ham) and the Queen (trout) are masters in the gastronomic panorama.
Points of interest
San Daniele del Friuli in addition to the excellent prosciutto also offers many sites of cultural interest. One of these is certainly the Church of San Antonio Abate. This church gives us evidence of Friulian art between the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance and houses the most beautiful cycle of Renaissance frescoes in the region. For this reason it is called the “Sistine Chapel” of Friuli.
The Guarneriana Library is also famous: a treasure chest of inestimable cultural value dating back to the fifteenth century. In the fifteenth century in Italy libraries were still, more than anything else, private collections belonging to an individual, a family or specific social, religious or university groups. The idea that a library could be opened and managed by its community of reference was not at all obvious but this was the intuition that Guarnerio d’Artegna, archpriest-parish priest of San Daniele del Friuli, realized. The Guarneriana was visited by illustrious personalities such as Foscolo, Nievo and Carducci. In addition, it passed almost unscathed between the two world wars thanks to the precautions taken by the competent Administration. In its premises are kept the Municipal Historical Archive and that of the ancient Hospital of Sant’Antonio.
Finally, one cannot fail to mention the famous Portonat, symbol of the city and designed in 1579 by Andrea Palladio, while the sixteenth-century bell tower of the Duomo, which was left unfinished, was designed by a disciple of Raphael, Giovanni da Udine.
