The Giro deserves an Oscar

Celebrated overnight in Los Angeles at “N.10” restaurant, owned by the famous former Italian footballer Alessandro Del Piero, is the shortlisting for the Academy Awards, the Oscar, of the Lithuanian film “Wonderful Losers. A Different World”, which was shot almost entirely at the 2015 Giro d’Italia.

In the presence of many of the representatives of the American movie industry and the RCS Sport CEO, Paolo Bellino, the Lithuanian movie director Arūnas Matelis spoke with joy and hope about his film. It is among the 2019 Oscar candidates in the Best Foreign Film category, representing Lithuania. The movie has already won various awards in international festivals, including the Best Documentary in this year’s Trieste Film Festival.

“Wonderful Losers. A Different World” uncovers the invisible side of Giro d’Italia, one of the harshest and most popular cycling races in the world. Matelis was the first film director in 40 years to be allowed to shoot the race from inside it.
