The second phase of Gazprom – RusVelo training camps in preparation for the Giro d’Italia are underway on the Etna Volcano in Sicily.
The athletes are living at the altitude of 1950 meters and training at heights between 200 and 2000 meters. The team approached preparation very seriously: three trainings camps are planned before the start of the Giro. All of them have their particular focus on distribution of loads, as well as an emphasis on different types of riders.
At the first camp, there were mostly mountain riders. At the second camp, take part more classical riders and sprinters. The third camp, right before the Giro, will be the shortest and complex. The majority of riders are training under the supervision of Italian coach Michele Devoti. All of them are extremely motivated, says the recent winner of Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali, Sergey Firsanov: “The mood is positive and competitive, as expected, without stress and pressure – preparations are being held in normal mode. Training is primary power-oriented, lasting between 4-7 hours a day”.
